Professor Abdulfattah A. Aboaba from the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has been sentenced to two years in custody by a Magistrate Court in Maiduguri.
The charge was for criminal intimidation under Section 397 of the Penal Code.
The judgement, disclosed on Friday in Maiduguri, cited a letter of complaint received by the Borno State Commissioner of Police on November 3, 2021, from Professor Shehu Mustapha Liberty.
The complaint alleged intimidation and threats to life during an incident on October 29, 2021, at an Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) UNIMAID Congress Meeting.
During the trial, witnesses presented by both the Prosecution and Defence testified before the trial judge.
The Defence Counsel was granted the opportunity to cross-examine all prosecution witnesses to verify the accuracy of the accusations.
Considering the plea from the Defence Counsel that the convict was a first-time offender with a good character, Senior Magistrate Grade 1, Alhaji Saleh Isa, opted for leniency.
The sentenced Professor Aboaba to two years in custody, offering an alternative fine of N10,000 in default.
The courtroom drama unfolded as a result of the clash between Professor Aboaba and Professor Liberty during the ASUU UNIMAID Congress Meeting, marking a regrettable turn of events that culminated in a legal battle.
