Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka has taken a significant step in addressing the issue of sexual harassment on its campus by initiating the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras throughout the institution.
These cameras will be strategically placed in lecturers’ offices and various locations across the campus.
This decision to install CCTV cameras is a direct response to the growing cases of sexual harassment within the university and reflects the management’s commitment to curbing the misconduct of lecturers involved.
The installation process has already commenced, with the Faculty of Law being one of the initial areas to receive the new security measures.
Several weeks ago, the university management took action against some lecturers implicated in sexual harassment cases.
This action included the removal of certain lecturers from their positions and the suspension of others.
Prof. Charles Esimone, the Vice Chancellor of the University, personally removed a lecturer (name withheld) from the Faculty of Law and other lecturers accused of sexual harassment following concerns raised by affected female students.
Despite some lecturers expressing concerns over the installation of CCTV cameras in their offices, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, has remained firm in this decision.
He emphasized that discussions with students should not occur in secret, as lecturers are paid with taxpayers’ money, and transparency in their duties is paramount.
Support for the installation of CCTV cameras has also emerged within the university community. Some employees have voiced their approval, believing that this move will boost students’ confidence, as communications will no longer be shrouded in secrecy.
Dr. Emma Ojukwu, the Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor on Public Relations Matters and Special Duty, confirmed that the installation of CCTV cameras is a proactive approach to combatting sexual harassment at the university.
Ojukwu explained that the installation process is ongoing, starting with the Faculty of Law and gradually extending to other faculties.
A central control room and physical motorized patrol will manage the equipment, although the total cost of the project is yet to be determined.
