In a compelling press conference at his quarters in Abeokuta, embattled Speaker Olakunle Oluomo sheds light on the orchestrated impeachment by 18 lawmakers, revealing the tumultuous events that unfolded on Tuesday.
Oluomo said that despite numerous calls from media houses, he refrained himslef from addressing the situation until Friday, believing that government and party leaders would intervene.
Expressing gratitude to the state Governor, Dapo Abiodun for his fair intervention, he shares insights into the alleged impeachment mentioned in the government’s press release.
Oluomo narrates the challenges faced since assuming office in June, with some members consistently opposing his position.
Emphasizing his commitment to democratic principles, he urges dissenting members to express their objections without resorting to illegal measures.
Detailing the events of Tuesday, Oluomo discloses that chaos erupted when certain lawmakers forcibly entered the chamber during a meeting.
Olumo while seeking intervention, he said he had to promptly approach the governor’s office, where Abiodun expressed displeasure and assured resolution.
Despite awaiting a conclusive decision on Wednesday, Oluomo said he received a notice of impeachment after he was announced to ha e even Impeached.
Asserting the importance of due process, Oluomo points to clear rules within the House, insisting on a prescribed procedure for the removal of the speaker.
Drawing parallels with the removal of the former deputy speaker in the ninth legislature, he underscores the need for a lawful and transparent transition of leadership.
In a resolute stance, Oluomo declares, “Until due process is followed in compliance with the law, I remain the Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly.”
The statement read “The title of this engagement is what I will call “I remain the Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly.” I, Olakunle Oluomo Taiwo, remain the Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly.
“I have been inundated with a series of calls from various media houses, but I have restrained myself from addressing the situation since Tuesday when the drama took place on the floor of the House.
“ This is because I believed that the leaders of government and the party would intervene. However, by Wednesday, when I realized that the intervention was not forthcoming as expected, I decided to address the press.
“I want to express my gratitude to the governor of the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his fair and just intervention, as confirmed in the government’s press release yesterday. It mentioned the alleged impeachment of Speaker Olakunle Oluomo Taiwo. Now, let me provide some context to what happened.
“Since my emergence as Speaker in June last year, I have faced challenges. Some members who opposed my position have consistently created problems. However, I’ve always emphasized that if they don’t want me as Speaker, they should express it without resorting to breaking the law.
“I’ve been fortunate to win my election four times back-to-back, progressing from a member to deputy speaker to speaker. There’s nothing special about the speaker’s seat that I cannot leave as a Democrat and a young journalist. I respect the House of Assembly’s right to elect and change leadership but insist on following due process.
“Now, regarding the events of Tuesday, we resumed without any issues. However, during a meeting, some members forcibly entered the chamber, leading to chaos. I immediately went to the governor’s office seeking intervention.
“At the governor’s office, he expressed displeasure with the situation and assured me that he would address it. He met with the concerned members, urging them to reconsider their actions. Despite waiting for a resolution on Wednesday, I received a notice of impeachment without proper adherence to due process.
“Our rules are clear; removing the speaker requires following a prescribed process. I insist on due process, similar to how we handled the removal of the former deputy speaker in the ninth legislature.
“In summary, until due process is followed in compliance with the law, I remain the Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly.
