The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has joined his ancestors, barely a year after ascending the prestigious throne of the ancient city.

The Special Assistant to the late Oba on Media, Chief Toye Arulogun confirmed the report, saying, official confirmation would soon be made .

When asked to confirm the death of the Olubadan, Arulogun said “Yes, that was how we saw it. Please wait a while; an official statement will be released soon.”

Oba Olakulehin, who turned 90 just two days ago on July 5, passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025. His death marks the end of a short but historic reign as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

He was officially presented with the staff of office by the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, following the demise of his predecessor, Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II.

Oba Balogun died on March 14, 2024, at the age of 81, after serving as Olubadan for just over two years, having ascended the throne in March 2022.

Oba Olakulehin, a respected figure in Ibadan’s chieftaincy structure, rose through the military line and became the Balogun of Ibadanland before his elevation to the Olubadan stool. His short reign was marked by efforts to maintain peace and uphold traditional values in Ibadanland.

His passing has thrown the entire Ibadan traditional council and the people of Oyo State into mourning, especially given the back-to-back transitions on the revered throne within the span of 16 months.

As is customary in the unique Ibadan succession system, attention is now expected to shift to the next most senior high chief in line, potentially heralding another historic transition in the leadership of one of Nigeria’s most culturally significant traditional institutions.

Further details regarding funeral rites and official announcements from the Olubadan-in-Council are expected in the coming days.
