A United States Congressman, Riley M. Moore, has dismissed claims that Washington supports any move to break up Nigeria, warning that separatist agitations would worsen insecurity and place Christian communities at greater risk, particularly in the North and Middle Belt.
Moore spoke in a statement on his verified X account after a visit to Nigeria, where he said he met government officials, church leaders, humanitarian agencies and internally displaced persons to assess the scale of insecurity and religious persecution in the country.
“I have travelled to Nigeria and engaged in multiple high-level meetings with Nigerian officials, the Church, aid groups across the country and IDPs, to get a better understanding of the rampant persecution of Christians in Nigeria,” the lawmaker said.
He stressed that the issue of Nigeria’s division did not feature in his engagements, insisting that any attempt to weaken the country’s unity would only embolden terrorists and aggravate violence.
“In my discussions, the idea of dividing the country has not come up in any serious way. Efforts to embolden separatists hurt Christians in Nigeria, especially in the North and Middle Belt,” Moore stated.
He added that the implications of Nigeria’s destabilisation would extend beyond its borders, warning that a fractured country could worsen security challenges across the African continent.
“A destabilised Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent,” he said.
Moore also reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for victims of terrorism and insecurity across Nigeria, saying the protection of vulnerable communities remained a priority.
“I remain committed to working to save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ and, for that matter, all Nigerians suffering from the instability wrought by terrorists throughout Nigeria,” he said.
The US lawmaker linked his position to ongoing security cooperation between Washington and Abuja, describing the newly signed bilateral security agreement as a significant step towards addressing violence and strengthening relations between both countries.
“The US and Nigeria have just entered into a security cooperation agreement, and that is an important step in tackling the violence in Nigeria and deepening and strengthening the bilateral relationship between our great nations,” Moore added.
