The United States government has announced a significant reduction in visa validity for most Nigerian applicants.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that effective immediately, Nigerian citizens applying for most categories of non-immigrant and non-official visas will now be issued single-entry visas valid for only three months, a stark contrast to the previous policy that allowed multiple-entry visas valid for up to two years.
The announcement was made by the US Mission in Nigeria via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, July 8, 2025.
“Effective today, most non-immigrant & non-official visas for Nigerian citizens will be single-entry with 3-month validity,” the embassy stated, adding that the move is in reciprocity to Nigeria’s own visa policy toward US citizens.
The development is expected to impact thousands of Nigerians, including students, tourists, business travelers, and families who previously enjoyed the flexibility of multiple-entry visas. It also raises concerns about the cost and convenience of frequent travel between both countries.
Though the US has not specified which visa categories are exempted, the term “most non-immigrant & non-official visas” suggests that categories like B1/B2 (business and tourism) are directly affected.
Nigeria currently offers US citizens single-entry visas in several categories, and the US has often emphasized the principle of reciprocity in its global visa policies.
The change comes amid ongoing diplomatic recalibrations and immigration reforms between both nations.
