A group of individuals launched a violent assault on medical staff at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Lokoja.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, was triggered by the death of a patient.

A medical doctor, who documented the chaos on his X handle, k_f2d, detailed the harrowing experience.

According to the doctor, the group, led by an unnamed political figure, forcibly entered the hospital premises and demanded to see the doctors on duty.

Videos shared by the doctor depicted a scene of chaos, with individuals struggling over a firearm, and gunshots heard in the background.

The doctor explained that the attackers, fueled by grief over losing a patient, specifically targeted the medical staff.

“My team was called to the A&E to review a new patient. A group of men in kaftan broke through the gate and started demanding for the doctors on duty,” wrote the doctor in the video caption. “They came for the doctors because they lost a patient. One of them, I learnt, is a political leader.”

The situation escalated as the attackers confronted the medical staff, resulting in physical altercations.

The doctor described how he and his colleagues were cornered, almost having their shirts torn. Fearing for their safety, the medical team managed to escape to another ward.

The assailants wreaked havoc in the A&E, assaulting any hospital worker they encountered, including nurses, doctors, and security personnel.

To counter the escalating violence, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) confronted the attackers with a firearm, but the situation took a dangerous turn as the gun was wrestled away, leading to shots being fired.

With the hospital gate locked, medical staff found themselves in a precarious situation, forced to hide in different locations within the hospital.

The doctor captured the chaos on video, underscoring the severity of the situation at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Lokoja.

This incident bears eerie similarities to a reported case in January 2023, where a relative of a patient allegedly attacked a medical worker at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State, following the loss of a family member.
