Kareem Babatunde, a 30-year-old visually impaired graduate of the Federal College of Education (Special) in Oyo State, has reached out to the Nigerian public for support after a tragic accident left his urethra ruptured.
Babatunde, who lost his sight due to complications from malaria on July 19, 1998, shared his plea in an interview with a prominent newspaper.
According to reports by PLATFORM TIMES, the incident unfolded as he embarked on a journey to collect his employment letter from a training center located adjacent to the governor’s office in Alagbaka, Akure. This opportunity was facilitated by the State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
Babatunde recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “I mounted a commercial motorcycle, and the rider assisted me, but he was unaware of a nearby gully filled with iron. Consequently, I fell into the gully.”
He continued, “I had a friend who sold drugs and treated people, so I called him to come and attend to me because I initially thought it was a minor injury.
” Upon examination, he found no physical injury but noticed bleeding in the genital area. He tried to stop the bleeding.”
“At one point, the bleeding stopped, so I went to sleep. Around 4 pm, when I attempted to urinate, I realized that I couldn’t pass urine. The pain intensified, and the bleeding resumed,” he explained.
After being turned away from three hospitals, he received a diagnosis of bulbar urethra stricture at the Federal Medical Centre in the state.
The initial surgery cost N70,000, and he now faces a second surgery, which is considered a permanent solution, with a price tag of N1 million.
Babatunde earnestly appealed to the public for assistance, describing the unbearable pain he experiences daily.
He stated, “It has not been easy. I feel pain every time, and even passing urine through the catheter is excruciating.
“The pain continues to worsen each day. I am appealing to Nigerians to help me raise the necessary funds because there is no help from any other source.
” I have no one, and even providing for my basic needs has become a daunting challenge.”
