The Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA has confirmed the arrest of four party agents with money credit cards in Ogun.
The operatives who were on election duty intercepted the agents who intended to buy votes with hundreds of cards at Ibara Housing, Abeokuta.
PLATFORM TIMES had earlier gathered that some political parties are allegedly giving out money to buy the support of voters.
Our reporters observed party agents giving unique cards to voters with which they will get credited N10,000 at Olorunsogo, Ward 7, PU 13.
Another party was seen writing down names of voters to be credited #5000 after voting.
They require that voters display their ballot paper after voting as against the electoral act.
“The party agents request that any voter interested in the money display their ballot papers to be observed for voting. Once you are given the card, you take it to any ATM stand and can. There is also another party writing down the names of those who vote for their party as observed by the party agents”, one voter said.
Section 22 of the Electoral Act 2022 as signed by President Buhari says, “Any person who— (a) is in unlawful possession of any voter’s card whether issued in the name of any voter or not; or (b) sells or attempts to sell or offers to sell any voter’s card whether issued in the name of any voter or not; or (c) buys or offers to buy any voters’ card whether on his behalf or behalf of any other person, commits an offense and is liable on conviction to a fine, not more than N500,000 or imprisonment not more than two years or both.”
Confirming the arrest, NDLEA said in a tweet, “JUST IN: Operatives of @ndlea_nigeria on election duty stop and search, just intercepted four party agents with hundreds of money credit cards, to buy votes at Ibara housing estate, Ogun state. Each card contains 10k and is activated to cash with a code.
“Gen. Buba Marwa has directed that they be handed over to the police after proper documentation.”
