Why Atiku, El-Rufai Will Fail To Unseat Tinubu In 2027 – Shekarau

Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has dismissed the chances of a coalition led by opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, to defeat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

Shekarau argued that the emerging alliance is merely a gathering of individuals with political ambitions rather than a structured political movement capable of challenging the APC’s dominance.

His statement comes two days after Atiku, El-Rufai, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, announced the formation of a Coalition of Opposition Political Parties to unseat Tinubu.

In a statement shared with journalists by his spokesperson, Dr. Sule Yau, Shekarau said, “This is just a gathering of certain individuals with political ambitions; none of them has officially consulted their party leadership.”

He maintained that a coalition’s success is not determined by big names but by political structure and unity, which he claimed the opposition figures lacked.

“The coalition of opposition figures is a good development, as seen in their recent meeting under what they call an opposition alliance.

However, none of the key figures involved represents their party leadership,” Shekarau stated.

According to him, only registered political parties, not individuals, can legally form a merger, making the coalition an informal gathering rather than a legally recognized political force.
