Joseph Aloba, the father of late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has explained why he buried his son just a day after his sudden death on September 12, 2023.
Aloba, who spoke in an interview with activist Martins Otse (VDM), said the decision to bury Mohbad quickly was not entirely his own but was influenced by circumstances beyond his control, including police refusal to issue a report and rejection by the morgue.
“When I got to the house, Mohbad’s body had already been embalmed. I couldn’t even confirm if he was truly dead—I was in shock,” Aloba said in a video shared on Saturday.
“We took him to the police station, but the officers refused to give us a report because the death wasn’t reported at their station earlier. I had signed the death certificate, but they took it from me and didn’t return it.”
Aloba said he attempted to deposit his son’s remains at a morgue in Ikorodu but was turned back because he lacked the required police and medical reports.
“The morgue attendant said they couldn’t accept the body without those documents. The ambulance driver also abandoned the body, and I was left stranded. That’s when I told Mohbad’s uncle, Daroosa, to make burial arrangements,” he recounted.
The singer was eventually buried in Ikorodu on September 13, 2023—a move that triggered public outrage and nationwide protests demanding justice.
Aloba also accused Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi, of withholding the medical report that could have helped in depositing the body at the morgue.
“She had the doctor’s report and didn’t tell anyone. Instead, they took the body home and embalmed him locally, against medical advice,” he claimed.
The bereaved father expressed disappointment in the police, saying they dismissed his petition against the local embalming and failed to interrogate those who lived with the singer before his death.
“There was no forensic investigation. Nobody was questioned. I regret being born in Nigeria. I take responsibility for burying him the next day, but what exactly killed Mohbad?” he said.
PLATFORM TIMES recalls that following public pressure, Mohbad’s body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for autopsy, and the Lagos State Coroner’s Court recently recommended prosecution of the auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, who allegedly administered a fatal injection to the singer.
