A Superintendent of Police, Ibrahim Sini,has revealed that he turned down a N150 million bribe allegedly offered to him by a Lagos-based businessman, Akintoye Akindele, to ensure his peace of mind and uphold his integrity.
Akindele, who faced arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja in August 2023, was subsequently remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The charge sheet indicated that the bribe was intended to facilitate Akindele’s escape abroad and to secure a favourable report from the police after their investigation.
SP Sini was leading the Inspector General of Police’s team of investigators on this case.
He shared his experience at a dinner organised in his honour on Friday in Abuja.
Reflecting on the incident, Sini recounted, “I am very happy to be here, and I want to appreciate the organizers of this program. They have exceeded my expectations and motivated me further. When the incident occurred, the individual asked me, ‘Do you want to be rich?’ He presented it as an opportunity for wealth.”
Sini continued, “I responded that it depends on the type of riches. I desire money that allows me to sleep peacefully at night, not something that will cause me constant worry and fear. Hence, I chose to do the right thing for my peace of mind, for my organization—the Nigeria Police Force—and for my country.”
He also urged the youth to uphold their integrity, emphasizing, “Integrity counts. It’s important to be diligent and to stand out even amidst challenges. Nigeria is our country, and it shall be great.”
During the event, Sini was awarded a plot of land in Abuja. Presenting the land documents, the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, lauded Sini’s exemplary conduct.
He stated, “We are proud of you. Your actions have brought pride to the Nigeria Police Force. We urge other members of the force to emulate SP Sini.”
Chukwuemeka Okoye, the Chief Executive Officer of Vegas Homes and one of the event organisers, praised Sini’s integrity, noting that it serves as an inspiration.
“SP Sini’s actions have not only brought honor to himself and the Nigeria Police Force but have also inspired countless others to stand firm against corruption and uphold the highest ethical standards.
His integrity serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that even in challenging circumstances, it is possible to remain true to one’s values,” Okoye said.
Okoye further highlighted the significance of recognizing individuals of integrity, adding, “This honour is aimed at not only appreciating the laudable conduct of Superintendent Ibrahim Sini but also demonstrating that society values individuals of integrity and good conduct. We want to show that the Nigerian Police Force has officers who are professional, exemplary, and motivated to engage in meaningful policing.”
