President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to regulate social media to combat the spread of misinformation and abuse, emphasizing the need for responsible discourse.
The revelation came during the presentation of the book ‘Nigerian Public Discourse: The Interplay of Empirical Evidence and Hyperbole’ by former Minister Babatunde Fashola in Lagos on Friday.
Represented by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, President Tinubu expressed concern over the proliferation of fake information on social media, leading to confusion and deception among citizens.
He highlighted the global challenges and changing dynamics, urging leaders to engage in evidence-based discourse for the sake of the nation’s future.
“In this new world, public discourse is driven by alternative facts, dropped with reckless abandon on social media, allowing for the creation of false realities to confuse and deceive people,” President Tinubu stated.
Addressing the importance of shared truths and a common reality, he emphasized the necessity for leaders and citizens alike to engage in meaningful discussions.
He underlined the role of objective facts in shaping public opinion and fostering national cohesion.
President Tinubu commended the book authored by Babatunde Fashola, describing it as a valuable resource for scholars, researchers, and students.

Echoing President Tinubu’s sentiments, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, emphasized the need to regulate social media, aligning with the broader objective of fostering responsible communication in the digital age.
