The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has shed light on the frequent disagreements that arise between state governors and their deputies, citing a variety of reasons for this issue.

Ganduje’s remarks came amidst a backdrop of ongoing tensions between Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy, Philip Shaibu.

Speaking at the APC’s national secretariat in Abuja during a visit by a forum of former deputy governors, Ganduje attributed the root cause of these conflicts to the influence of sycophants within the political landscape.

Drawing from his own experience as a former deputy governor to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for two terms, Ganduje explained how he deliberately avoided sycophantic circles to ensure a harmonious working relationship with his principal.

Ganduje emphasized the significance of deputy governors, noting that they play a crucial role in cases when the governor is unavailable.

However, he added that the constitution doesn’t define explicit responsibilities for them, which can sometimes lead to them being perceived as “spare tires.”

In a bid to address the recurring conflicts between governors and deputies, Ganduje revealed that he has authored a book titled ‘Deputising and Governance in Nigeria.’

This publication seeks to explore and provide solutions to the challenges inherent in the deputy governor role.

Ganduje underscored the contentious nature of the deputy governor position, highlighting its global controversy.

He noted that in Nigeria, deputies are required to run on the same ticket as their governors.

This unique setup often leads to complex dynamics that can be hard to navigate.

The APC chairman provided a metaphorical explanation of the intricate dynamics between governors and deputies.

He suggested that if a deputy stays close to their governor, it can lead to accusations of being subservient, while if they assert themselves, they might be accused of overstepping their bounds.

Ganduje’s book delves into various instances of deputy relationships, not just limited to governors and deputies but also extending to presidents and vice presidents.

He emphasizes that the concept of deputizing is essential across different spheres of working relationships.

Appreciating the forum of former deputy governors for their felicitations on his appointment, Ganduje assured that he would work tirelessly to ensure that the administration of Bola Tinubu meets the expectations of the Nigerian people.

Additionally, the Deputy Governors’ Forum, led by Chris Akomas, has called for an immediate review of the APC constitution to align the party’s objectives more effectively.

This suggests that the party is looking to streamline its internal structure for improved cooperation and harmony among its members.
