In a harrowing account, Amina Hassan, widow of the late Hassan Yakubu Makuku, vice principal of Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, recounted how armed bandits killed her husband and abducted 25 schoolgirls in the early hours of Monday.
Amina said that she was awakened around 3:30 a.m. by unusual noises outside her window. Initially believing it was animals, she tried to wake her husband.
“Before I knew it, there was a bang on our door and it was forcefully opened. I tapped my husband, thinking animals had gotten inside and were destroying our things.
“As soon as he got up, we realised they were not animals but robbers armed with guns. We struggled with them, and then one of them pulled out his gun and shot my husband,” she said.
Amina said the attackers dragged her outside the house, ignoring her pleas to spare her life. Her daughter, however, inadvertently drew the bandits’ attention and was taken to the school hostel along with other students.
“They told her to lay down so they could shoot her too. She cleverly asked to be allowed to go and ease herself. When they opened the door, they saw other girls, and their attention shifted. That was how she escaped into the bush. By the time she returned, it was already morning,” Amina added.
President Bola Tinubu has condemned the attack and ordered the immediate rescue of the abducted girls.
In a statement released by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the President reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to protecting all Nigerians, particularly schoolchildren.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the growing insecurity in northern Nigeria, with schools increasingly becoming targets for armed groups.
Authorities are yet to confirm the status of the abducted students or announce any arrests related to the attack.
