Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ruled out any possibility of reconciling with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of disregarding a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu.
The conflict between the two political heavyweights, which revolves around control of Rivers State’s political structure, had led to a political crisis marked by an impeachment attempt against Fubara and the eventual demolition of the state’s legislative chamber.
In an effort to restore peace, President Tinubu convened a meeting on December 18, 2023, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Both parties agreed to an eight-point peace deal, which included the withdrawal of impeachment proceedings and pending court cases.
Governor Fubara, in a statement on December 25, 2023, expressed his commitment to implementing the agreement but emphasized that the peace pact was not a “death sentence.”
However, during a media chat on Sunday, Wike alleged that Fubara and his camp had failed to honor their commitments under the peace deal. He accused the governor of flouting directives issued by President Tinubu.
“I’m wondering, what conflict to resolve? Mr. President, in his wisdom, called all parties. He said withdraw the impeachment notice, you go and do this, you go and do that, but they never returned to him,” Wike said.
“The assembly withdrew the impeachment notice; you did one and two, and then you sent people to go to court. Elder, have you gone back to Mr. President to tell him we can’t do three and four? Nothing.”
Wike expressed astonishment at what he described as political insubordination, questioning the rationale behind disregarding a presidential directive.
“I have never seen this in my life — for a president to call parties, and one party goes back and says it’s political. Who does that?” he queried.
The minister also accused Fubara of failing to fulfill his obligations as governor, further complicating any possibility of reconciliation.
