The power tussle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Thursday, as a Wike-backed National Working Caretaker Committee formally took over the party’s affairs nationwide, dissolving state working committees in 14 states and asserting exclusive control of the opposition party’s structures.
Rising from a meeting in Abuja, the caretaker committee declared itself the only legitimate authority within the PDP, insisting that its actions were sanctioned by the party leadership and the Board of Trustees (BoT) and carried out in line with the PDP constitution and the laws of the land.
The Acting National Chairman of the committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the intervention was necessary to stabilise the party and halt what he described as internal plots to weaken and destroy it.
“We will not allow those we accommodated in the PDP to turn around and kill our party,” Mohammed said, openly acknowledging the backing of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom he described as a key party leader.
He disclosed that the caretaker committee had been handed a 60-day mandate to manage the party’s affairs across the country, warning party members and the public against recognising or participating in parallel meetings and leadership claims.
“I want to thank the leadership of our great party, the Board of Trustees and our party leader, Hon. Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, for giving us this mandate to manage the activities of the party for a period of 60 days,” he said.
Mohammed stressed that the caretaker committee remained firmly in charge of the PDP nationwide, urging members to ignore what he called deliberate misinformation aimed at causing confusion within the party.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the committee’s Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, read a communiqué reaffirming Abdulrahman Mohammed as the authentic head of the PDP and dismissing claims that a rival faction led by Turaki had been recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The claims circulating in the media that the Turaki-led illegal executives have been accepted by INEC are false and misleading,” the communiqué stated.
The committee challenged the rival faction to publicly produce evidence of any such recognition.
“We challenge Turaki to produce the code with which he uploaded his so-called executives to the INEC portal,” it added.
As part of far-reaching resolutions, the caretaker committee ratified the dissolution of PDP state working committees in Borno, Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara, Yobe, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Delta, Taraba, Kano and Lagos states.
Caretaker committees were also approved to oversee party affairs in the affected states pending the conduct of fresh congresses.
In a bid to strengthen internal coordination, the committee announced key appointments, naming Professor Adenike Ogunse as National Women Leader, Engineer Deji Doherty as Deputy National Secretary, Hon. Olaka Nwogu as National Treasurer, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed as National Publicity Secretary and Ambassador Dr. Ibrahim Bala-Aboki as National Youth Leader.
Looking ahead, the committee approved a timetable for state congresses to commence on January 9, 2026, while clarifying that a date for the PDP national convention would only be fixed after the conclusion of all state congresses.
“The national convention date is yet to be fixed. That can only come after the completion of the state congresses,” the spokesperson said.
The latest development underscores the deepening factional crisis within the PDP, fuelling concerns about the party’s unity, stability and readiness for future electoral battles.
