Wike Defies Expulsion Threats, Affirms Loyalty To PDP Despite Political Controversy

Former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has reiterated his allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), amidst brewing expulsion threats from within the party’s ranks.

Despite facing criticism for his support of APC candidate Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, Wike remains steadfast in his PDP membership.

The discord between Wike and the PDP escalated during the 2023 presidential race when he advocated for maintaining the party’s internal power-sharing arrangement by insisting on the presidential ticket being zoned to southern Nigeria.

His divergence from supporting PDP’s northern candidate, Atiku Abubakar, led to speculations about his party affiliation.

Following Tinubu’s victory and subsequent appointment as a minister, questions arose regarding Wike’s party loyalty.

However, Wike has reaffirmed his membership in the PDP, despite being noticeably absent from party activities and campaigns.

“I am a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” Wike asserted during a recent media briefing in Abuja. “Have you ever seen me change anything?”

Wike defends his decision to support Tinubu, stating, “The one I supported before, what happened? I have decided to take a break. As  you see me now, everybody should carry their cross.”

Emphasizing his commitment to the rule of law, Wike maintains that his actions during the 2023 election were in line with his principles and do not warrant disciplinary measures from the party.

“Discipline me for what? That I did what? I am an advocate of the party’s constitution,” he declared.

Looking ahead, Wike underscores the importance of focusing on governance, stating, “Now is the time for governance. Now is the time to do your assignment.”
He remains resolute that when the time for politics resurfaces, allegiances will become apparent.

Despite facing criticism and potential repercussions, Wike stands firm in his support for the PDP while navigating through the complexities of Nigerian politics.
