Wike Vows To Lead Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign In FCT, Rivers

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will spearhead the re-election campaign of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, promising to deliver both the FCT and Rivers State for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike, a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made this declaration on Monday during a live media chat in Abuja.

He dismissed ongoing speculations surrounding his political loyalty and role in the coming polls, insisting that his support for President Tinubu is unambiguous.

“I have told you before — is it because I am in Asiwaju’s government? Are you not aware I will lead his campaign in Rivers State? You want me to say no?” the minister queried rhetorically.

Wike also expressed confidence that President Tinubu would secure a significant victory in the FCT in 2027 — a reversal of his 2023 electoral performance in the territory, where the president garnered less than 10 per cent of the vote.

“Are you not aware that he did not get up to 10 per cent here in FCT? But he will win here. Are you not aware?” Wike said, reaffirming his political commitment to the president’s second-term bid.

The former Rivers State governor, who played a pivotal role in the 2023 general elections by opposing his own party’s presidential candidate, further anchored his support for Tinubu on a broader southern political agenda.

“Because I have said the South must produce the president,” he declared, reiterating his long-standing advocacy for power rotation to the South.

Wike’s statement is expected to deepen the ongoing rift within the PDP and intensify debates over political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers say his open support for President Tinubu, despite being a PDP member, highlights a growing trend of political realignments among Nigeria’s elite.

Tinubu’s performance in Rivers and the FCT in the last general elections was considered underwhelming, with both territories won by opposition parties.

However, Wike’s influence in both regions could prove decisive should he follow through on his campaign commitment.

The development comes as political parties begin early preparations for what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential election season.
