The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has warned governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against excluding him from key party activities, declaring that any attempt to sideline him would hasten the party’s collapse.
Wike, who spoke during his monthly media parley in Abuja, expressed deep frustration over what he described as the deliberate efforts of some PDP governors to edge him out of the party’s major consultations, despite his enormous contributions to its growth and survival.
According to the former Rivers State governor, the attitude of some current party leaders was self-destructive and capable of “burying” the PDP if not urgently addressed.
“Have I not said it before now that the booby trap they are setting will consume them? The way these present governors are doing things, they will bury this party,” Wike warned.
The FCT minister questioned the logic behind his exclusion from recent PDP stakeholders’ meetings, arguing that his current ministerial position does not erase his relevance within the party.
“I am the FCT Minister. Are you saying that because I am no longer a governor, I should be excluded from PDP stakeholders’ meetings? And you expect the party to survive? That’s impossible,” he said.
Wike, who has been at loggerheads with some PDP governors since the 2023 presidential primaries, dismissed claims that the party’s internal crisis was being fuelled by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“All these talks about APC are rubbish. Is it APC that makes you take wrong decisions? Two or three people think because they are governors and receive large allocations, they can decide for everyone. You tell me to follow? Follow who?” he queried.
The minister also took a swipe at the PDP leadership for what he described as poor preparation ahead of the forthcoming national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“If they had done the right thing, would anyone stall the convention? They haven’t conducted the required congresses or other processes that should precede it,” he said.
Wike’s outburst comes amid renewed tension within the PDP over alleged divisions among its governors and key stakeholders ahead of the convention, where new national officers are expected to emerge.
The former Rivers governor has remained one of the most vocal figures in the PDP, often accusing the party’s leadership of betrayal and incompetence.
Political observers believe Wike’s warning could further deepen existing cracks within the opposition party, already struggling to regain national relevance after losing power nearly a decade ago.
