Residents of Lafiyagi Dzwafu village in Katcha Local Government Area, Niger State, are reeling from shock following the alleged murder of Baba Aliyu, 25, by his wife, Fatima Dzuma. L
The tragic incident, reportedly driven by a breakdown in their relationship, has left the community in mourning.
According to eyewitness accounts, Baba married Dzuma three years ago following her divorce from her first husband.
While their union was childless, Dzuma had a child from her previous marriage. Compounding the situation, Baba’s first wife recently gave birth, with preparations underway for the naming ceremony when the tragedy occurred.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed Dzuma’s arrest after the discovery of Baba’s lifeless body in a bush near Katcha on December 31, 2024.
Wasiu Abiodun, the Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed that Dzuma, 27, confessed to killing her husband following a violent altercation.
Dzuma reportedly claimed that Baba had assaulted her during the argument.
In retaliation, she struck him on the head with a pestle while he was asleep, fatally injuring him. She then used a scarf to strangle him, breaking his hand in the process.
After committing the crime, Dzuma wrapped Baba’s body in a mat, dragged it to the backyard, and later discarded it in the bush.
For three days, she feigned ignorance of his whereabouts, even as his family searched desperately. Eventually, she admitted her actions, claiming, “The devil made me do it.”
The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
“The suspect has been arrested and is in custody. She will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further investigation and prosecution,” Abiodun said.
Baba’s body was transported to Bida General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with residents condemning the act and calling for justice.
