The Imo State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the brutal assault of a young girl in Uruala community, Ideato North Local Government Area, after her guardian allegedly poured candle wax and boiled water on her as punishment for allegedly stealing meat.
The state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, was said to be deeply disturbed by the incident and has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to immediately investigate and ensure the suspect is charged to court.
The suspect, who admitted to the act during an interview with journalists, claimed she had “no idea” the punishment would cause severe injuries.
She alleged that the child stole meat from her pot, adding that she “only battered her to prevent future occurrences.”
Child rights advocate and founder of the Okeoma Foundation, Mr. Okeoma, said his organisation blew the whistle on what he described as a disturbing case of child bullying and violence.
According to him, the foundation not only rescued the child but also handed her over to the police and aided in arresting the suspect.
“This wickedness is not tolerated in any sane society and must be condemned,” he said. “We have taken responsibility for the child’s medical and welfare needs.
She has been taken to the Imo State University Medical Centre, Owerri, for proper medical examination and treatment.”
Okeoma expressed gratitude to the Executive Secretary of the Imo State Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Uche Ewelike, for approving comprehensive free medical care for the victim due to the urgency of her condition.
The police have assured that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to ensure justice for the injured child.
