Nigerian gospel music icon, Yinka Ayefele, has fired back at allegations by fellow artiste Beautiful Nubia accusing him of copying a song melody, sparking a heated debate over copyright and originality in the gospel music scene.
The controversy began when Nubia, via his verified Twitter account, claimed that Ayefele and another gospel singer, BBO, used melodies from his earlier composition, Seven Lifes, without proper credit.
He highlighted that Ayefele’s 2012 track, My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti), and BBO’s 2026 single, Amin, bear striking similarities to his original work.
Nubia lamented the growing trend of uncredited musical borrowing in the Nigerian gospel industry, tweeting:
“There was Yinka Ayefele with My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti) in 2012 and now someone called BBO with ‘Amin’ this year. Both stole their melodies from our original song ‘Seven Lifes’. When will Nigerians (especially the so-called gospel musicians) learn to respect copyright?”
In response, Ayefele took to his verified Facebook page to challenge the claims, questioning the song’s origin and the legitimacy of the accusations. In a post, he asked:
“WHO IS THE COMPOSER OF EBAMI GBONDO YI GBE ..JANGBALAJUGBU …. Who was acknowledged.. INFRINGEMENT AYE..”
Ayefele’s track My Faith in God appears on his 2012 album, Goodness of God, released on December 9 of that year.
His reaction has reignited discussions about intellectual property rights in Nigeria’s gospel music scene, where disputes over song ownership have become increasingly common.
Fans and industry stakeholders have weighed in on the matter, urging stricter enforcement of copyright laws and proper recognition of original creators in the entertainment sector.
The feud between Ayefele and Nubia underscores the challenges facing Nigeria’s music industry in protecting artistic works and ensuring fairness among musicians.
