Former President Muhammadu Buhari has commended President Bola Tinubu for steering Nigeria through what he described as “difficult but essential reforms,” urging that such efforts should not be derailed by partisan politics.
Buhari gave the charge in a statement issued on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in celebration of Tinubu’s two years in office.
The former president lauded Tinubu’s leadership and encouraged Nigerians to continue backing the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration despite the current economic challenges.
“Desired changes must not fall victim to nettlesome domestic politics,” Buhari said, adding that meaningful reforms take time and cannot yield results overnight.
While acknowledging the economic hardship being faced by many Nigerians, especially the most vulnerable, Buhari stressed that the pains are not without purpose, urging collective responsibility in tackling the nation’s socio-economic woes.
“The task of reducing poverty and inflation mustn’t be left only for the government. The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can,” he said.
The former leader called for optimism among the populace, saying that confidence in the country’s future remains essential.
“Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” Buhari advised, as he extended his goodwill to President Tinubu.
“I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care,” the statement concluded.
President Tinubu marked two years in office on Wednesday amid continued debates over the impact of his administration’s sweeping economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of exchange rates.
