Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and the need to protect the broader interests of the state.
The resignation, contained in a letter addressed to the chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Yusuf said his decision, which takes effect from January 25, followed prolonged internal disputes, leadership disagreements and legal battles that have unsettled the party’s structure at both state and national levels.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the NNPP of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” he said. “The party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination.”
He added that the disputes had widened divisions and weakened cohesion within the party, creating uncertainty and disenfranchisement among members.
“After careful reflection, and guided strictly by public interest, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” the governor said, stressing that the move was taken in good faith and without bitterness.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that Yusuf’s exit was not in isolation, as 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen also resigned their NNPP membership.
Despite his departure, Yusuf expressed appreciation to the party for providing him the platform to contest and serve, acknowledging the support he received from its leadership and members since 2022.
The resignation letter was acknowledged by the party’s Diso-Chiranchi Ward Secretary, Kabiru Zubairu, who commended the governor’s performance in infrastructure development, urban renewal, health, education and economic empowerment.
“I concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party,” Zubairu said.
“Though efforts are ongoing to contain it, we have no option but to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors produced by the NNPP.”
The development is expected to reshape Kano’s political landscape ahead of upcoming realignments within the state.
