Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has issued a stern warning to residents aiding insurgents, declaring that collaborators with Boko Haram will be treated as traitors and decisively dealt with amid renewed attacks in the state.
In a statewide broadcast on Thursday in Maiduguri, Zulum attributed the recent spike in violence to intensified military operations that have dislodged insurgents from their enclaves, forcing them to infiltrate civilian communities.
He described the development as “deeply concerning,” but maintained that security agencies remained in firm control of the overall situation.
“The recent spike in activity by these criminal elements is a direct consequence of sustained and aggressive military operations. These operations have forced them to flee and seek refuge within our communities,” the governor said.
Zulum, however, reassured residents that the government had activated a robust response to counter the renewed threats, insisting that the “worst days are over.”
“As the Chief Security Officer, I assure you that the security environment, while tested, remains under control. These cowardly elements will find no sanctuary in Borno State,” he added.
The governor cautioned residents against complacency, stressing that the insurgency had not been completely defeated despite earlier gains recorded through joint operations involving security agencies and the Civilian Joint Task Force.
He warned that individuals providing support, shelter, or information to insurgents would face the full weight of the law.
“You are not patriots; you are enemies of the state. You will be hunted down and made to face justice. We will no longer tolerate actions that undermine our collective peace,” Zulum declared.
The warning comes days after a series of coordinated explosions rocked Maiduguri, killing no fewer than 23 persons and injuring 108 others.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed that the attacks, which occurred at the Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, and the Post Office flyover, were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.
Police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, said investigations were ongoing, adding that security agencies responded swiftly to contain the situation and prevent further casualties.
Zulum urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with credible intelligence, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and restoring lasting peace across the state.
