Zulum Raises Alarm Over Renewed Boko Haram Attacks, Says Borno Losing Ground

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has expressed deep concern over the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings across the state, warning that the security situation is deteriorating.

Speaking on Tuesday during a high-level security meeting in Maiduguri attended by top military commanders, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders, Zulum described the recent wave of attacks as a major setback in the fight against insurgency.

“Renewed Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings in many communities almost on a daily basis without confrontation signal that Borno State is losing ground,” Zulum stated.

The governor specifically lamented the dislodgement of military formations in Wajirko and Sabon Gari in Damboa Local Government Area, Wulgo in Gamboru Ngala, and Izge in Gwoza LGA. He said the coordinated assaults led to the deaths of both civilians and security personnel, undermining recent security gains.

Zulum, who has been vocal in supporting the military’s operations in the region, called for increased federal intervention, particularly the deployment of advanced technology to counter the evolving tactics of insurgents in the Sahelian zone.

“It is disheartening to note the recent attacks and dislodgement of military formations in these areas. The killing of innocent civilians and security operatives is a serious concern and a setback to the fragile peace in Borno and the North-East region,” he added.

While appreciating the support of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, Zulum urged the federal government to strengthen the military with modern equipment and technology to better manage the state’s porous borders with Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.

He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to working with security agencies to restore lasting peace and prevent further loss of lives and displacement of communities.

The renewed violence has sparked fear among residents, raising questions about the sustainability of recent counter-insurgency gains in the region, which has been at the epicentre of Boko Haram’s over-a-decade-long insurgency.
