In response to escalating attacks on farming communities across Kaduna, Niger, Kogi, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Gbagyi Elders Forum (GEF) has revealed employing spiritual methods to combat bandits and insurgents, citing some successes with the approach.
Speaking at the conclusion of their event themed ‘Uniting for a Greater Future’ in Minna, Niger State, Elder Peterson Kaura, Chairman of the Gbagyi Elders Forum’s Board of Trustees, emphasized the need for government support.
He called upon both the Federal Government and state administrations of Niger, Kaduna, Kogi, and the FCT to enhance partnerships aimed at halting assaults on farming communities.
Highlighting the cultural threats posed by insecurity and urbanization, Elder Kaura stressed the forum’s commitment to collaboration with authorities in tackling these challenges.
He outlined plans for a Gbagyi Land Rights Committee to address land ownership issues and secure compensation for displaced communities.
Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Andrew Doma acknowledged the effectiveness of spiritual methods in countering attacks and capturing bandits.
He noted, however, the critical shortage of sophisticated weapons among local vigilantes and members of the Civilian Task Force, hindering their ability to confront well-armed adversaries effectively.
“While our spiritual methods have helped in apprehending bandits, our youths lack the necessary firearms due to legal restrictions on vigilante groups,” stated Elder Kaura.
“We urge the Federal Government to permit access to these weapons to level the playing field and enhance community defense.”
The forum also appealed for infrastructural support, advocating for the completion of the Sarkin-Pawa to Kaduna road to bolster security operations and stimulate economic activities in the region.
The Gbagyi Elders Forum reiterated its commitment to advocating for the welfare of the Gbagyi people, promoting economic development, and addressing the socio-economic challenges facing their communities across several states.
