No fewer than 147 structures in Lagos State are expected to be affected by the construction of the service lane of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Federal Government has disclosed.
President Bola Tinubu made the disclosure on Sunday during a stakeholder engagement and the flag-off of repair works on the Eko Bridge, Marine Bridge and a flooded section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Lagos.
Tinubu, represented at the event by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said five of the 147 structures would be fully affected by the project, while the remaining structures would experience minimal impact.
The President assured affected property owners that the Federal Government would provide compensation where necessary.
He said the government was engaging stakeholders to secure their support and cooperation for the projects, stressing that infrastructure development sometimes required affected communities and property owners to make adjustments for the broader public benefit.
“For all of us to enjoy the full benefit of infrastructure, we have to shift a bit, so that it becomes an asset that will outlive all of us,” Tinubu said.
The President said the stakeholder engagement was designed to ensure that residents and other stakeholders were carried along in the implementation of the projects.
He assured those whose properties would be affected that compensation would be paid at the appropriate time.
“It will be given to you at the right time,” he said.
Tinubu also appealed for continued cooperation from Lagos residents, saying the government was committed to delivering infrastructure capable of supporting economic growth and improving connectivity.
He described Eko Bridge as one of the oldest bridges constructed after Nigeria’s independence, while noting that Marine Bridge remained an important link to the Lagos seaports.
The President said the Federal Government had undertaken extensive rehabilitation and renovation works across Lagos State, urging residents to recognise and support projects that would deliver long-term benefits.
He commended stakeholders for their participation in engagements with the government and praised the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for his efforts in advancing road infrastructure development.
Tinubu also urged the Lagos State Government to sustain its development drive across the state.
“There are days when we accept criticism for us to do better, but there are days when things have been done, and they have been done right, and we need to give recognition and support where it is most deserving,” he said.
