Sixteen people, including several children, were trapped early Saturday when a building collapsed in the Dan Dishe area of Kwanar Yashi, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service said 13 of those trapped were rescued alive, while three children were brought out unconscious following the incident, which occurred at about 4:32am on August 8, 2026.
The fire service disclosed this in a statement, saying its emergency responders were mobilised after receiving a distress call from one of its personnel, Aminu Sani Warure.
According to the agency, responders arrived at the scene to find a building measuring approximately 20 by 30 feet had collapsed.
Among those rescued alive were six children identified as Al-Mustapha Yusuf, 15; Khadija Yusuf, seven; Ummusalama Yusuf, 10; Madina Yusuf, six; and Hafsat Yusuf, nine.
The identities of eight other rescued persons were not immediately available.
The three children rescued unconscious were identified as Affan Yusuf, five; Hassana Yusuf, seven; and nine-month-old Ummulkursum Yusuf.
The victims were subsequently handed over to Usman Ibrahim, identified as their father’s brother, for further necessary attention.
The Fire Service said the cause of the collapse had not been established, adding that investigations were ongoing.
The incident has renewed concerns over building safety, particularly during the rainy season when weakened structures and waterlogged foundations can increase risks of structural failure.
The agency urged residents to observe safety precautions and remain vigilant, stressing the need for community responsibility and prompt reporting of potentially dangerous structures.
