The Muslim Community of Oyo State (MUSCOYS) has honoured four prominent Nigerians for their contributions to humanity and the development of society.
The awardees are the former Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Prof. Abd’Semii Adewale Musa-Olomu; former Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, Ogbomoso, Engr. Dr. Taofeek Adekunle Abd’Femi; former Chairman of the Oyo State Civil Service Commission, Alhaji Yekeen Balogun; and Alhaji Abd’Waheed Amoo.
The recipients received the Award of Meritorious Service on Sunday at the MUSCOYS Secretariat, Samonda, Ibadan, during the community’s Annual General Assembly and inauguration of its new executive council.
The recognition of Musa-Olomu, in particular, was attributed to his exemplary leadership, humanitarian interventions and achievements during his tenure as Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.
Speaking at the event, the outgoing Chairman of MUSCOYS, Alhaji Is-haq Adekunle Sanni, said Musa-Olomu’s tenure was marked by improvements in infrastructure, medical service delivery and institutional capacity.
Sanni also commended the former medical director for his attention to staff welfare and efforts to create an environment that encouraged professional growth.
He said Musa-Olomu’s leadership extended beyond administrative responsibilities, noting that his tenure also provided employment opportunities for Nigerians through recruitment into the medical centre.
According to him, the jobs created through the hospital provided means of livelihood for many families.
Sanni said the award was not simply a recognition of Musa-Olomu’s occupancy of the position of medical director, but an acknowledgement of the impact of his leadership and the institutional improvements recorded during his tenure.
Leadership Is A Trust — Don
The annual assembly also featured a lecture titled, “Leadership Role in Islam: What Is Expected of Muslims?”, delivered by the former Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, Prof. Abd’Afees Oladosu.
Oladosu described leadership as a trust from Allah, stressing that those entrusted with authority would be held accountable for their stewardship.
He urged Muslims occupying positions of responsibility to make justice, integrity and accountability the guiding principles of their leadership.
The scholar warned against viewing leadership as an avenue for personal benefit, stressing the religious obligation of leaders to protect the interests of those placed under their care.
Gbadamosi Emerges New Chairman
A major highlight of the assembly was the presentation of the report of the Shura Selection Committee on the emergence of a new leadership for MUSCOYS.
The committee said the selection process was designed to ensure broad representation across Oyo State while promoting unity and cohesion among the Muslim community.
Following the presentation of the report, Barrister Kazeem Adekunle Gbadamosi, SAN, was unveiled as the new chairman of MUSCOYS.
Prof. Taofeek Yekeen emerged as secretary, alongside other members of the new executive council.
The new executives were subsequently inaugurated by Barrister Ismail Lawal, formally marking the commencement of their tenure.
The event attracted religious leaders, Imams, Islamic scholars, former commissioners, representatives of Muslim organisations and communities, captains of industry and other dignitaries.
Musa-Olomu Dedicates Award To Mentors
Responding on behalf of the award recipients, Musa-Olomu expressed appreciation to the outgoing MUSCOYS leadership for recognising their contributions to society.
He attributed his philosophy of leadership and service to the mentorship and guidance he received from Alhaji Kunle Sanni, Prof. Abd’Rasheed Aderinoye and Professor Emeritus S.O. Noibi.
Musa-Olomu described the three men as significant influences in his journey of service and leadership.
He subsequently dedicated his award to them, expressing gratitude for their guidance, mentorship and exemplary contributions to his development.
The event ended with calls for the new MUSCOYS leadership to build on the achievements of its predecessors and strengthen unity, accountability and service within the Muslim community across Oyo State.
