The federal government has officially concluded its investigation into the alleged poisoning of 18 pupils at St. James Primary School, Owo-Ope, Osogbo.
Contrary to initial concerns, the investigation found no evidence of poisoning and has determined the incident to be a case of misinformation.
In a press statement released by Olumobi John Adewale from the Office of the School Feeding Programme, it was revealed that Dr. Yetunde Adeniji, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on School Feeding, was appointed to conduct a thorough fact-finding mission.
The team, during their visit to St James RCM Primary School, discovered that the purported incident on December 12, 2023, was largely misrepresented.
The entire O-Meals programme team, led by Governor Ademola Adeleke and represented by Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi, welcomed the investigating team.
Deputy Governor Adewusi categorically stated, “This incident on Monday, December 12th, 2023, was a clear case of misinformation. Unfortunately, such occurrences are not uncommon in governance at any level.”
Providing insights into the guidelines ensuring proper health measures for the school feeding programme, O-Meals state coordinator, Mrs. Olufunke Adesigba, emphasized that all cooks undergo routine checks for tuberculosis and relevant medical examinations to guarantee the well-being of the students.
Chief Medical Director of Teaching Hospital Osogbo, Prof. Peter Babatunde Olaitan, confirmed receiving 32 pupils in two buses but added that all the students were singing and dancing upon arrival.
This contradicts the initial reports of poisoning and raises questions about the accuracy of the information surrounding the incident.
The federal government’s swift response to investigate and dispel the poisoning claims underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students in school feeding programs.
The incident serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of misinformation and the importance of accurate reporting in matters concerning public health and education.
