19 Northern Governors, NSA, Security Chiefs Unite To Combat Escalating Insecurity Crisis

Amidst the escalating insecurity crisis plaguing Northern Nigeria, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, spearheaded a crucial gathering on Thursday, bringing together 19 governors from the region alongside top security chiefs.

The marathon meeting, shrouded in secrecy, unfolded within the confines of the Office of the NSA (ONSA), stretching from midday till late evening.

The urgency of the summit was underscored by recent harrowing incidents, including the abduction of 287 students and teachers from the LEA Primary and Junior Secondary School in Kuriga, Kaduna State, on March 7, 2024.

Additionally, the abduction of 112 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Gamboru Ngala LGA of Borno State, coupled with the recent abduction of 15 Tsangaya students in Sokoto State, further amplified the gravity of the security predicament.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, elucidated the primary agenda of the closed-door deliberations.

He emphasized the imperative for a collective strategy to combat the pervasive insecurity gripping the region.
Governor Yahaya stressed the indispensable need for both non-kinetic and kinetic approaches to tackle the multifaceted challenges exacerbating insecurity.

“The essence of the meeting is to address the recent surge in kidnapping incidents across the North-West, necessitating a critical review of existing strategies,” Governor Yahaya remarked.

“We must explore alternative avenues to augment the efforts of our security agencies and address the root causes of the crisis.”

Amidst acknowledgments of the relentless efforts by security agencies, Governor Yahaya underscored the indispensability of integrating non-kinetic strategies to effectively tackle the underlying drivers of insecurity.

He advocated a paradigm shift in approach, advocating for a holistic fusion of kinetic and non-kinetic methodologies to engender a tangible improvement in the security landscape.

“Incorporating non-kinetic measures alongside the ongoing efforts of our security forces is paramount,” Governor Yahaya affirmed.

“Only through this synergistic approach can we envisage a substantive enhancement in our collective security apparatus.”
