A 20-year-old man, identified as Pascal Ogbogu, has been arrested by the police for allegedly killing his 56-year-old father in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The suspect was said to have attacked his father with a machete on Tuesday evening before fleeing the scene.
The Anambra State Police Command, in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Wednesday following a distress call and a joint search involving the police, family members and members of the Abatete vigilante group.
According to the statement, police operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division mobilised to the scene after receiving information about the incident and found the deceased’s body inside a room.
Ikenga said the victim had sustained a deep machete wound to the throat.
The statement partly read, “The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, has commended the prompt response and community support that contributed to the arrest of a 20-year-old man, identified as Pascal Ogbogu, who is alleged to have murdered his 56-year-old father with a machete in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
“Preliminary information reveals that, on the evening of August 25, 2026, the suspect allegedly attacked his father and fled the scene.”
The police said the deceased’s remains had been evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The command added that the suspect’s arrest was facilitated by information provided by community members who assisted security operatives in tracking him.
The Commissioner of Police commended the family members, residents, vigilante personnel and police operatives involved in the arrest, stressing the importance of community participation and timely information sharing in combating crime.
Ama directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
The police said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, while assuring the family and the public that the suspect would be subjected to due process.
The command also urged residents to continue to provide timely information to security agencies to help prevent crime and protect lives and property.
