The Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, has acquired a multi-million naira autism diagnostic tool as part of activities to commemorate the 2025 World Autism Awareness Month.
A statement issued by Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Ajibola Abiola stated that the Provost and Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Paul Agboola, made this known on Monday, during an event organised by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Department.
The statement further stated that the Provost announced the purchase of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2)—a globally recognised instrument for diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders in children.
According to him, it is the first of its kind to be acquired by any psychiatric hospital in Nigeria.
Dr Agboola said the equipment would enable accurate diagnosis of autism locally and reduce the need for parents to travel abroad, especially to South Africa, for confirmation of autism in their children.
He added that the tool would become available for use after the training of professionals to operate it.
He also commended Guaranty Trust Bank Plc for its ongoing support in funding autism treatment and praised the Ogun State Government’s collaboration with the hospital through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare since 2013.
Themed “Advancing Neuro Diversity and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” this year’s Autism Awareness Month was marked with an awareness walk within the hospital premises.
The management team later paid homage to the hospital’s Top Management Committee and expressed appreciation to Dr Agboola for his role in establishing and sustaining the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Department.
