Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said he may make his last attempt at Nigeria’s presidency in the 2027 general election, citing his age and the high stakes of the contest.
Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 election, disclosed this during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday.
The former Vice President said turning 80 by 2027 would significantly shape his political decision, describing the election as a crucial personal and national moment.
“Certainly yes, because the stakes are higher, and I believe that will be my last outing,” he said.
Atiku, a serial presidential contender, has made multiple attempts to clinch Nigeria’s top office since returning to partisan politics in 2003.
His presidential ambition dates back to 1993 when he contested under the Social Democratic Party primaries but later stepped down for the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola.
Over the years, Atiku has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, contesting several elections on different party platforms.
His latest comment is expected to stir political conversations ahead of the 2027 race, particularly within opposition ranks, as permutations over alliances, candidacies, and succession plans gather momentum.
