Former Kano State Governor and Vice-Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has warned governors seeking re-election in 2027 that relying on manipulation of election results and state structures will not guarantee victory.
Kwankwaso said many incumbent governors who had failed to address the concerns of their constituents were now defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress in the hope of securing political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He stated this on Sunday in Abuja during the News Agency of Nigeria Personality Interview Series, where he assessed the political climate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former governor said Nigerians were increasingly dissatisfied with the performance of governments at both the federal and state levels, citing insecurity, poverty, unemployment and deteriorating public services as major sources of public frustration.
According to him, the growing political awareness among Nigerians means that incumbency and control of government machinery may no longer be enough to secure electoral victory.
“What I foresee in the 2027 elections is that most of the governors seeking re-election will be disappointed because people will not support them,” Kwankwaso said.
He maintained that politicians who had failed to deliver good governance could not expect voters to automatically return them to office simply because they controlled state structures.
Kwankwaso also criticised the movement of politicians from opposition parties into the APC, describing it as an attempt by some political actors to gain electoral advantage rather than a response to the needs of Nigerians.
He argued that citizens had legitimate reasons to demand better governance, pointing to insecurity and the large number of children out of school as evidence of the challenges confronting the country.
The former Kano governor used his administration as an example of what he described as the possibility of achieving meaningful development when public resources were properly prioritised.
He recalled that his administration expanded access to primary, secondary and tertiary education for qualified residents and introduced measures aimed at addressing the Almajiri challenge.
He also cited the provision of educational infrastructure, including hostels for students, as part of his administration’s efforts to improve access to education.
Kwankwaso urged political leaders to listen to the grievances of citizens and recognise that voters have the ultimate power to determine who occupies elective offices.
He expressed confidence that Nigerians would make their choices at the ballot box in 2027, stressing that politicians who failed to meet public expectations should be prepared for change.
The former governor’s remarks come amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with several politicians moving across party lines as preparations for the elections intensify.
He warned that such political calculations would not necessarily translate into electoral victory, particularly where citizens remained dissatisfied with the performance of incumbent administrations.
He said the 2027 election would ultimately test whether political control and incumbency could withstand growing voter dissatisfaction across the country.
