2027: Presidency Fires Back As El-Rufai, Kwankwaso Hold Private Meeting

 Daud Olatunji

The presidency has dismissed recent political manoeuvres in the North as futile attempts to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections.

This response came after a significant private meeting between Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Nasir el-Rufai, a key figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the immediate past governor of Kaduna State.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the  meeting, held at el-Rufai’s Abuja residence, was confirmed by one of Kwankwaso’s aides.

The source, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the discussions were fruitful and aimed at forming a united Northern front to challenge Tinubu’s presidency in 2027.

“The thinking in the North now is how to ensure that the region presents a common front to dislodge the APC from power in 2027,” the aide disclosed.

“A series of meetings have been ongoing across party lines, and el-Rufai is playing a crucial role in these developments.”

In response, a source within the presidency downplayed the significance of these meetings.

“It’s not a political sacrilege for politicians to align and realign to strategise for political power. It has always been like that in this country. They are free to do so,” the source remarked, emphasising that President Tinubu remains focused on his current tenure.

The source added, “It is too early in his four-year tenure to be dragged into 2027 politics. The President is currently focused on delivering on his electoral promises and making life better for Nigerians irrespective of their political affiliations.”

Another presidential aide highlighted the reality of Nigerian politics, where preparations for the next election commence immediately after the previous one concludes.

The aide expressed confidence in Tinubu’s performance, stating, “Tinubu’s second term will be determined by his performance at the end of this tenure. I’m sure that he won’t have to campaign too hard because his performance will do that for him.”

The aide pointed out improvements in national security and the economy as early indicators of Tinubu’s effective governance.

“Already, the nation’s security has begun to take shape; the security forces are working hard to restore peace in the country, and the nation’s economy has started to improve owing to the policies introduced by the President,” the aide elaborated.

“I’m convinced that in the next two to three years, Nigerians will feel the positive impacts of government policies as the economy is on the trajectory of revival.”

Reflecting on Tinubu’s political journey, another source highlighted the President’s resilience and strategic acumen.

“Recall that some powerful figures never supported the President at the 2023 polls; but Asiwaju deployed his political capital, having built a formidable goodwill across the country to win that election.

“Let them gather; they’ll eventually scatter.”
