Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has raised an alarm over the dire state of primary education in the state, revealing that a staggering 75% of primary schools are operating without teachers.
Expressing deep concern, Governor Fubara disclosed that a comprehensive assessment conducted by the firm, New Global, in collaboration with his administration, uncovered this alarming reality.
Furthermore, the governor lamented that 90% of these schools are in a dilapidated condition, severely compromising the quality of education provided.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara stressed the fundamental role of primary education in shaping the character and future of the youth.
He underscored the urgency of addressing this crisis, stating, “For us to develop as a society, for us to get it right from the foundation, it is at the primary school level.”
Despite the grim findings, Governor Fubara assured the public of his administration’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector, along with health and agriculture.
He highlighted a recent offer of $5 million by New Global to enhance teacher capacity and improve the learning process at the primary level.
However, with the majority of schools lacking essential teaching staff, the governor emphasized the need for substantive action rather than mere infrastructure renovations.
In addition to the education crisis, Governor Fubara shed light on the strain faced by the state’s healthcare system.
He revealed that primary and secondary health facilities are largely non-functional, leading to an overwhelming burden on tertiary health institutions.
To address this issue, the governor announced plans to revisit and operationalize the five zonal hospitals, aiming to expand healthcare services and alleviate pressure on tertiary hospitals.
