Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, on Tuesday said he met with the United States Consul General in Lagos, Rick Swart, to discuss Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed this in a statement shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that the meeting focused on deepening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States, with particular emphasis on credible and transparent elections.
According to him, both parties examined strategies to ensure future elections in Nigeria are conducted without interference, while creating an enabling environment for all political parties, especially opposition groups, to operate freely.
He said, “This morning, in Lagos, I met with the U.S. Consul General, Mr Rick Swart, where we discussed strengthening the bilateral relationship. We focused on promoting credible elections in Nigeria, ensuring they are free from interference, and fostering a space where all political parties, especially opposition parties, can thrive and contribute.”
The former presidential candidate added that discussions also covered expanding trade and business opportunities between both countries as part of broader efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.
Obi noted that he was accompanied to the meeting by Adefolaseye Adebomi Adebayo.
Describing the engagement as productive, he expressed optimism that Nigeria’s electoral system would witness significant improvements in credibility and transparency ahead of the next general elections.
“We are hopeful that, moving forward, Nigeria’s elections will be even more credible and transparent,” he added.
