Ogun State Government, in collaboration with national bodies, says it is intensifying efforts to sensitize officials on the importance of adhering to data protection laws.

The state Governor, Dapo Abiodun emphasized this necessity during the opening of a one-day workshop themed “Data Protection Act Compliance – An Imperative for A Vibrant Digital Economy.”

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the workshop, held at the MITROS Banquet Hall in Abeokuta, aimed to educate government officials on the intricacies of the Data Protection Bill signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on June 12, 2023.

With the participation of the Ogun Bureau of Information Technology (BIT), the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC), and Upperlink, the event sought to equip officials with the knowledge necessary to ensure regulatory compliance and safeguard citizens’ privacy.

Governor Abiodun underscored the significance of data protection as a fundamental human right enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.

He emphasized the need for government officials to be well-versed in data protection management to avoid unintentional breaches and uphold the legal foundation of the nation’s digital economy.

Representing the governor, Special Adviser on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Dayo Abiodun, urged participants to disseminate the knowledge acquired to their subordinates.

This cascading of information, he noted, is vital for promoting good governance and ensuring compliance at all levels of government.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, highlighted the role of data protection laws in enhancing security and safeguarding privacy.

He praised Ogun State for its commitment to digital compliance and urged other states to follow suit to remain relevant in an increasingly digital world.

Dr. Segun Akano, CEO of Upperlink, emphasized the importance of data protection in overseeing government transactions and fostering public trust.

His lecture, “Implementing Data Protection And Privacy in Public Sector,” underscored the critical role of effective data management in promoting transparency and accountability.

Participants, including Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, lauded Governor Abiodun for organizing the workshop.

They recognized its importance in facilitating digitalization efforts in various sectors and ensuring compliance with data protection laws.

With such initiatives, Ogun  aims to set a precedent for data protection compliance, thereby fostering a secure and vibrant digital economy while safeguarding citizens’ rights to privacy
