The acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Dr. Chris Maiyaki, has called for enhanced quality assurance and reputational capital as critical tools for transforming Nigeria’s educational landscape.
Dr. Maiyaki made this assertion during the inaugural Registry Lecture at Babcock University, where he delivered a keynote address titled “The Role of the University Administrator in a Changing University Environment: Issues and Prospects.”
In his address, Dr. Maiyaki highlighted the evolving challenges faced by university administrators in today’s dynamic higher education environment.
He emphasised the necessity for these administrators to adopt a creative and innovative mindset, which he described as essential for driving growth and progress within universities.
“Administrators must be adaptable and responsive to contemporary demands and challenges,” Maiyaki stated, urging them to embrace new technologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
However, he cautioned that technology should serve as a means to achieving university goals, rather than becoming an end in itself.
Dr. Maiyaki further advocated the integration of local content with emerging technologies and competencies, as recommended in the new university curriculum policy by the NUC.
This, he said, would enhance the relevance of academic content to scholars, contributing to the overall academic excellence, innovation, and growth of Nigerian universities.
The lecture, which was a hybrid event, attracted a diverse audience including university administrators, academics, and other stakeholders.
Notable participants included representatives from Adeleke University, Covenant University, Clifford University, and Tai Solarin University of Education.
The insights shared during the event sparked thoughtful reflections on the future of higher education leadership in Nigeria.
