In a significant move to address economic challenges faced by civil servants, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has approved a new minimum wage of N85,000 for workers in the state.
This development marks a substantial increase above the national minimum wage of N70,000 recently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.
The announcement was made following a closed-door meeting between the governor, labour leaders, and senior government officials.
The Head of Service of Rivers State, George Nwaeke, confirmed the decision, stating that the new wage policy would be implemented immediately.
“He (Fubara) has announced a figure that is higher than the national minimum wage,” Nwaeke said.
“He has set a sum of N85,000, which is above the minimum wage prescribed nationally.”
Nwaeke, who described the governor’s approval as unprecedented, expressed satisfaction with the development, highlighting the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants in the state.
“As the head of service and a major stakeholder in the labour family, I am very pleased to say that Rivers State civil servants have never had it this good since the inception of this state.
The labour union leaders and all the other major stakeholders were pleased with this development.”
The Chairman of the Joint Negotiation Team, Chukwu Emecheta, praised Governor Fubara for meeting the long-standing expectations of Rivers State workers.
Emecheta commended the governor’s dedication to ensuring the well-being of the workforce, stating that the wage increase would significantly improve the living standards of civil servants.
Alex Agwanwor, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State, also lauded the governor’s decision, noting that the new wage would provide much-needed relief to workers who have been grappling with economic hardship.
“This increase will greatly alleviate the economic challenges faced by workers in the state, especially in the face of rising inflation,” Agwanwor said.
