Judiciary Has Upright People But Few Are Tarnishing Our Reputation – CJN

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has decried the conduct of a few members within the judiciary, stating that while the Nigerian judicial system comprises many upright, hardworking, and knowledgeable judges, a minority of individuals are undermining its reputation.

Justice Kekere-Ekun made this statement on Saturday at a public discourse in Lagos themed “Ethics, Morality and the Law.”

The event, held in honor of Justice Habeeb Abiru’s elevation to the Supreme Court, saw Justice Kekere-Ekun emphasize the importance of personal accountability for those within the legal profession, reminding judges of their ultimate accountability to themselves and to God.

The CJN highlighted that the integrity of the judiciary relies not only on the application of the law but also on its alignment with ethical and moral principles, which are fundamental to public trust in the legal system.

“The role of judges and lawyers is pivotal in upholding both justice and societal values,” Kekere-Ekun said, calling on legal practitioners to be steadfast in ethical conduct as ministers in the temple of justice.

She stressed the influence of morality, particularly noting that both Islamic and Christian values advocate for righteousness, which should guide the judiciary’s actions.

Justice Kekere-Ekun urged legal professionals to uphold these standards, as public trust hinges on a justice system that resonates with the community’s moral convictions.

“Law cannot be supplanted by moral or ethical indications alone due to the diversity of perspectives. The assertive nature of the law is essential for peace, order, and security,” she added.
