Abeokuta Sports Club, one of Africa’s foremost sports institutions, is marking its 120th anniversary with a week-long celebration featuring activities aimed at honouring its rich history, promoting sports excellence, and contributing to community development.

Addressing the press in Abeokuta, the President of the club, Prince Seni Ogunyemi, revealed that six eminent members, including legendary footballer Chief Segun Odegbami, would be honoured during the milestone event.

Prince Ogunyemi highlighted the club’s enduring role as a stress-relief hub for chief executives, industrialists, retirees, and sports enthusiasts of all ages.

He outlined the lineup of activities for the celebration, which began on December 4 with an intra-club competition among its various sporting sections.

“On Friday, December 13, there will be a special Jumat service and a health talk at the Ogo Oluwa Bankole Pavilion,” he said.

“The grand finale will take place on Saturday, December 14, at the Sir Kensington Adebutu Legacy Hall, starting at 2:00 PM.”

To commemorate the anniversary, the club has embarked on two major projects: the total renovation of four blocks of its old chalets and the construction of a modern canteen to cater to members’ needs, particularly during late hours.

“Our administration has also undertaken several projects to enhance the club’s operations,” Ogunyemi said.

“These include the complete replacement of the three-gating security system, refurbishment of the club bus for smoother operations, and upgrading sporting facilities for the benefit of our members.”

Prince Ogunyemi stressed  the club’s commitment to sports development, citing its past contributions to events like the 2006 Gateway Games.

He disclosed that the club would collaborate with Ogun State in hosting the 2024 National Sports Festival.

“As a sports development club of international standards, we are ready to play our part in the forthcoming National Sports Festival,” he said.

“The Main Organizing Committee has already inspected our facilities, and we are well-prepared to host some of the games.”

He further praised Sir Kensington Adebutu for his contributions to the club’s growth, particularly the donation of an event center, which has significantly boosted its financial capacity.

However, Ogunyemi lamented the challenges hindering sports development in the state, notably the lack of sponsorship.

“While Abeokuta Sports Club remains a leader in sports in West Africa and beyond, adequate sponsorship is crucial to achieving our broader goals,” he added.

The 120th anniversary celebration is expected to reinforce the club’s legacy as a trailblazer in African sports and its continued commitment to community and sports development.
