The annual Omoluwabi Festival held in Abeokuta on Tuesday celebrated outstanding Nigerians for their virtues of integrity, hard work, and diligence, showcasing the essence of Yoruba cultural values.
The festival, spearheaded by Princess Adejoke Somoye, popularly known as Ewaede, attracted a cross-section of society, including students, artisans, and captains of industry.
Speaking during the event, Princess Somoye emphasized the need to celebrate individuals who embody the Omoluwabi trait—an enduring commitment to integrity and good character.
“In a society where money is often elevated above good character, it is vital to recognize those who still uphold values like hard work, diligence, and integrity,” Somoye said.
“This festival is about celebrating people who value truth and remain consistent in their beliefs.”
She disclosed that selecting the awardees was a challenging process, given the scarcity of individuals who consistently demonstrate Omoluwabi virtues.
Among the recipients were renowned filmmaker Tunde Kelani, industrialist Alhaji IBD Dende, Chief Ayo Biobaku of QMB, and posthumously, late Chief Mrs. Alaba Lawson and Alhaji Fatai Gbemisola (Fatgbems).
Somoye further explained that the festival serves to encourage younger generations to adopt these values, stressing that character and integrity are more important than wealth.
“Money is important, but your name and integrity are priceless. You can be wealthy while protecting your good name,” she advised.
Representing the Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Michael Gbadebo, Tajudeen Oladeinde, the Amona Baaroyin of Egbaland, commended the festival for upholding Yoruba virtues.
He noted, “The best virtue of any human, regardless of race, is the concept of Omoluabi. Anything outside this makes one a nonconformist in society.”
Film producer and awardee Tunde Kelani praised the initiative, stating that it would inspire more Nigerians to embrace Omoluwabi values.
He called for greater support for programmes that promote these virtues, particularly among young people.
The Omoluwabi Festival, which continues to grow in significance, highlights the importance of cultural values in fostering a society built on integrity and excellence.
