Former Governor Achike Udenwa of Imo State has raised startling allegations, revealing the extent to which money influences electoral outcomes in Nigeria.
In a candid interview on Edmund Obilo’s State Affairs podcast, Udenwa asserted that wealthy politicians can purchase not only votes but also the integrity of critical institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police, and even the army.
“Our society has regrettably reached a point where electoral success hinges more on financial capacity than on merit or public trust,” Udenwa remarked.
He emphasized that Nigerian voters often neglect to scrutinize candidates’ backgrounds and capabilities, instead succumbing to financial inducements.
When pressed about the potential for corruption within INEC and law enforcement, Udenwa did not mince words: “You can buy everybody.”
The former governor’s comments underscore deep-seated concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process, pointing to a system where financial prowess outweighs ethical considerations. Udenwa further stressed that curtailing this practice is imperative to ensure genuine leadership emerges.
Turning to internal party dynamics, Udenwa, a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees, attributed ongoing crises within the party to external interference orchestrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Despite acknowledging internal challenges, he expressed confidence in the PDP’s resilience against what he described as concerted efforts to destabilize the opposition.
