A teacher in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Mrs. Stella Nwadigo, has been arrested following public outrage over her maltreatment of a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael, during a writing lesson.
The incident, which occurred at Christ-Mitots School, was captured in a viral video showing the teacher slapping and yelling at the boy as he struggled to write the numeral “6.”
The footage prompted widespread condemnation, leading to intervention by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA).
In a statement released by the DSVA, the agency expressed its commitment to protecting children in educational institutions.
“We appreciate everyone who brought the disturbing incident of a teacher who was recorded physically abusing a 3-year-old boy to our attention.
“We are pleased to inform the public that the teacher in question has been arrested by Owutu FSU, and an investigation has commenced in earnest,” the statement read.
The agency emphasized the need for schools to be safe spaces for children and reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance policy for abuse of any form.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, sparked calls for stricter regulations to ensure the safety and well-being of children in schools.
Many viewers expressed outrage and demanded justice for the young victim.
As investigations continue, the Lagos State Government has assured the public of its resolve to hold offenders accountable and promote a protective environment for all children.
Mrs. Nwadigo’s arrest underscores the government’s stance against such acts, with authorities promising stringent actions to deter future occurrences.
The DSVA urged parents and guardians to report any suspected abuse, ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
