A devastating midnight fire claimed the lives of 24-year-old Jumai Sunday and her 18-month-old son, Nasir Rabiu, in the Kugbo furniture market area of Abuja.
The tragic incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, January 8, 2025, while the duo was asleep in their home.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire erupted while the mother and child were deeply asleep, and by the time neighbors and sympathizers arrived to assist after the fire was controlled, their bodies were discovered in the wreckage.
The police, led by Lakur Langyi, the officer in charge of Karu Division, confirmed the fire and stated that his team received distress calls shortly after midnight.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the lifeless bodies of Jumai and Nasir. The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, and investigations are currently underway.
In a statement, Langyi shared, “Yes, there was a fire incident in Kugbo at a place called Bakasi. My men received distress calls at midnight and moved to the area.
They discovered a woman, identified as Jumai Sunday, and her one-and-a-half-year-old son had been burnt to death. Our investigation is ongoing.”
Jumai, originally from Nasarawa Eggon in Nasarawa State, was laid to rest alongside her son at the Kugbo cemetery, located off the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Expressway.
As the community mourns the loss of the young mother and her child, authorities have intensified efforts to uncover the cause of the fire.
