The Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA) has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his historic election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO).

Adeniyi, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, made history on Saturday, June 28, 2025, by emerging as the first Nigerian to lead the WCO since the organization’s establishment.

The election took place at the conclusion of the 145th/146th Council Sessions held at the WCO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

The World Customs Organization is the apex international body responsible for setting global customs standards, comprising 185 member countries.

In a congratulatory statement signed by its National President, Engr. Mohammed Buari, UNIFEMGA described Adeniyi’s election as a well-deserved honour, citing his consistent record of excellence and dedication to reforming customs administration in Nigeria.

“The entire UNIFEMGA family across the globe heartily congratulates CG Bashir Adeniyi on this outstanding milestone,” Buari said.

“His emergence did not come as a surprise, given his track record of professionalism, integrity, and visionary leadership since assuming office.”

Buari expressed confidence that Adeniyi would replicate his transformative leadership at the global level, promoting cooperation, innovation, and efficiency in customs operations worldwide.

He also prayed for divine guidance for the new WCO chair, reaffirming UNIFEMGA’s pride in Adeniyi’s achievements.

“We pray that Almighty Allah (SWT) continues to guide him in this new responsibility. UNIFEMGA is indeed proud to be associated with his accomplishments,” he added.

Adeniyi’s elevation has been widely celebrated as a major diplomatic and professional boost for Nigeria on the global stage.
